Koh Samui is serviced byBangkok Airways and there are regular daily flights from aroundThailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong. Checkwww.bangkokair.com for details. From the airport take a taxi to oneof the piers where you can catch a ferry to Koh Phangan for about250 Baht. The last ferry leaves at 6pm.

by train: These run throughout the day leaving from Bangkok andsouthern Thailand. In our opinion, the overnight sleeper train isthe best value option when traveling to Koh Phangan. You will needto reserve your train ticket in advance as it is a popular way totravel. At the time of booking there is a choice of 1st and 2ndclass cabins which have either fans or air condi-tioning. Travelersoften prefer cooled cabins as the air conditioning systems ontrains produce cold and very dry air.

You will receive a table, a sofa which is converted to a flatbed in the evening and a waiter serving food and beverag-es. Trainsstop in Suratthani where you can arrange a bus and ferry ticket toKoh Phangan. More info and timetable on www.railway.co.th

by bus & ferry: From Suratthani: Songserm Ferry, Raja Ferry(both take approx 3 hrs) or the quicker Lomprayah catamaran (approx1.5 hrs). A night boat service is also available with comfortablebeds and fans. This departs at 11pm and takes about 7 hrs. From KohSamui: 3 different piers on Samui service Koh Phangan. The boatjourney can take anywhere from 30 min to 1 hour.

The Haad Rin Queen Ferry is another option and travels directlyto Haad Rin. From Koh Tao: Boats depart from Mae Haad pier atregular intervals and arrive in Thongsala. Choose between Songserm,Seatran or Lomprayah services. The best option is a combo ticketwhich includes an overnight bus to Suratthani and the onward ferryto Phangan. Koh Phangan means sandbar island because the island issurrounded by sand bars pro-

tecting the island from strong monsoons. Its the 5th largestisland in Thailand with a size

of about 168km2. More than half the island is designated asNational Park with over 80km2

of rain forest, flora and fauna.

Koh Phangan is not just a tourist destination, its a royalfavorite! King Chulalongkorn visited

Thansadet or The Royal Stream 14 times during his reign1868-1910. Other royals to venture the island are King Rama VII andRama IV (the current King of Thailand).

Life on the island a few centuries ago was a sharp contrast tothe bustling island we see

today. Around 200 years ago, the Chinese from Hainan migratedhere. Over 300 families were reported residing on the island(mostly Thai and Chinese) and earned a happy & peaceful livingoff coconut farming, fishing, birds nest

harvests and mining. Dating even further back...over 2000 yearsago, research and

discoveries prove settlements of most likely Muslim sea gypsiesexisted on the island.

Back to present time, the 1st bungalow was built about 20 yearsago and the islanders

began to change their way of life to join the tourism business.Over the last few decades, the population has increased, mostlyfrom

tourism, to 12,000 people and thats excluding tourists!

    ABOUT KOH PHANGAN

    EAT FRUIT... Thai STYLE!

No trip to Thailand is complete without trying some of theexotic and intriguing fruits. Many of these fruits are typicallyunavailable

in Western countries so try as much as you can while you arehere! In Thailand, one can find papaya, jackfruit, mango, mangosteen, langsat, longan, pomelo, pineapple, rose apples, durian, Burmese

grapes and other native fruits. You can even check out a fruitfestival: Chantaburi in Thailand each year holds the WorldDurian

Festival in early May or the Langsat festival each year inUttaradit province around the middle to end of September.

DurianRegarded by many in SE Asia as "king of fruits", durian isdistinctive for its large size, strong odor, and thorn-coveredhusk. The edible flesh emits a distinct odor that's strong &penetrating...even with the husk intact. Many describe the aromalike rotten onions, turpentine, and raw sewage! You either love itor hate it, try it for yourself and see!

RambutanRambutans have a wild hairy exterior with a smooth, sweet white fruit inside. They are easy to peel by splitting theskin apart like an orange. The flavor is similar to lychee fruit, but a bit more tart. Theyre delicious plain or better yet...in acocktail!Rambutans are delicate and dont keep longer than 1 or 2days at room temperature.

MangosteenThe fruit of the mangosteen is sweet, tangy and juicy, somewhat fibrous, with fluid-filled vesicles (like the flesh ofcitrus fruits) and an inedible, deep reddish-purple colored rind. The flesh is sweet, delicious in white segments like an orange. Each segment contains one to four bitter-tasting seeds.

DragonfruitThis fruit is similar to kiwifruit. The flesh ismildly sweet and the seeds eaten together with the flesh, have anutty taste and are rich in lipids. The fruit can be converted intojuice or wine or the flowers can be eaten or steeped as tea. Theskin is not eaten. The taste is quite bland similar to melon orkiwifruit.

LonganThe longan (Chinese: literally: "Dragon Eye"), is so namedbecause it resembles an eyeball when its fruit is shelled. The seedis small, round and hard, and black enamel-like. The fully ripened, freshly harvested shell is bark-like, thin, and firm, making thefruit easy to shell by squeezing the fruit out as if one is"cracking" a sunflower seed.

    FULL MOON

PARTYDOS & DONTS!!Upcoming Full Moon Party Dates:

    Sept.08 / Oct.08 / Nov.06 / Dec.06

Despite the size and madness of the party, there are relativelyfew problems. But in recent years, the party has gained attentionin the media for drug use and petty crimes. Problems common

at any event so large. The local community and businesses aretrying to combat any negative

influences. That said, its truly remarkable with tens ofthousands of intoxicated people partying on a beach, that the vibeis still overall one of

    enjoyment and happiness.

What makes the Full Moon Party unique and true to Thai style isthat its still not organised or

owned. It remains a big spontaneous party on the beach. It wasnever marketed, or advertised. It

began as a group of friends and grew organically, spread by wordof mouth, passed on from

traveler to traveler, into a massive celebration that has becomelegendary across the world.

That still today no one owns this massive mon-ey-making party istestament both to the relaxed

character of Thailand and to the magic of Koh Phangan. Peoplecome to the Full Moon Party

for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and that is undoubtedlywhat they get: The chance to be a part of a phenomenon, created andsustained by

people who love to party, which has been legendary for more than2 decades.

DONT ...take anything youre not prepared to lose. You never knowwhats going to happen so leave valuables like iPhones, fancycameras, and passports at home. If you are intending to get reallywasted and need a phone, buy a cheap one before you go. Take athrowaway camera and a reasonable amount of cash, hidden ondifferent parts of your body, and a back-up credit card as long asyou have another at home. Keep valuables in the safe at yourbungalow.

DO ...Be aware of what youre drink-ing. The number 1 problem onparty night is getting too inebriated. Be aware of how inebriatedyou feel. Sangsom drunkenness can come on hard and fast.Intersperse with soft drinks, water and chill-out breaks. Dont putyour drink down or accept drinks from strangers.

DONT ...get on a moped for any reason. Westerners on mopeds areaccidents waiting to happen and the roads are full of dangerous anddrunk drivers. The roads are dangerous on party night, pleaseimprove your chances by taking a taxi or walking if possible.

DO ...Know where youre staying. Have the contact information ofyour guest house and the contact info of a responsible friend orThai person at your guest house that can help you if you get intoany problems. You wouldnt believe the numbers of lost people thenext morning in Haad Rin.
